The global spread of COVID-19 is holding society in a firm grip. Healthcare in particular plays a crucial role in making this crisis manageable. We, as Fox-IT, have a lot of admiration and respect for the people working in this particular industry.
In addition to tireless employees in the health sector, well-functioning and adequately secured IT systems play a crucial role in ensuring continuity in health care. Unfortunately, even in these uncertain times, criminal groups (hackers) continue to carry out attacks that can victimize organizations in the healthcare sector. For example, in March the University Hospital in Brno (Czech Republic) fell victim to a cyber attack and a hacker group in the UK targeted systems of the Hammersmith Medicines Research where personal data of thousands of patients were stolen and published. In France and Spain, examples of several institutes and institutions that have been attacked by cyber criminals are now also known. If a similar attack were to hit hospitals in the Netherlands, the consequences could be severe.
That is why Fox-IT, in collaboration with the expertise center for cyber security in healthcare Z-CERT – where possible supported by the National Cyber Security Center – offers a helping hand to hospitals. As of Thursday April 2nd Fox-IT will make actual threat intelligence, on hacker groups who have been infamous for their targeted ransomware attacks, available to these hospitals free of charge. This information, known as Indicators of Compromise, concerns the main criminal groups and the methods they use. On the basis of this concrete technical information, hospitals will be able to prevent and detect cyber criminals from critical infrastructures at an early stage.
In addition to Z-CERT, Fox-IT has provided a team of specialist Threat Intelligence Analysts and Incident Responders to answer both general and urgent questions that may arise from the content of the report.
Our report with the corresponding up-to-date threat intelligence can only be requested by hospitals via Z-CERT.
